Introduction

The thirty years of independent Slovenia is one of the longest periods of continuous democracy in recent Slovenian history. After more than a century-long period of “fragmentary” parliamentarism marked by periods of dictatorships, autocracy, pseudoparliamentary experiments, Fascist, Nazi and the related collaborationist governments, Soviet socialism, “people’s power” and afterwards the specific self-governing socialism, we have spent a few brief decades in a classic parliamentary-party democracy.

In the current situation, when the fragile Slovenian democracy and Slovenian state, which was founded in probably the most turbulent part of Europe in terms of geography and culture, is facing one of the greatest trials in its existence as an independent state, it is particularly important that we take a critical look at this thirty-year period. For this reason, we, historians who are researching recent and contemporary history, have agreed to join forces and try to illustrate the achievements and wrong turns of the past thirty years in an objective and critical way. We cannot discover a coronavirus vaccine. However, we can help to protect and strengthen fragile Slovenian democracy. On this website, on the Facebook profile, and on other contemporary social networks you will be able to follow and use the most comprehensive collection to date of official documents, studies and everything else that has been researched and that we are currently researching, discussing at scientific conferences, in various publications, in exhibitions, in video presentations and in other forms of public presentations of our research achievements. We will also include the statements and diverging views of actors and contemporary critical observers of all segments of Slovenian society. We will do our utmost to point out historical patterns, experiences and actions which we must understand in order to be able to gaze into the future with clarity and focus. The past must remain history.
